Gagosian is pleased to present a new sculpture by Richard Serra.
Made of weatherproof steel, Transmitter (2020) measures 4 meters in height, 17.7 meters in width, and 18.2 meters in length, and will be installed in Gagosian Le Bourget’s vast main exhibition space.
In collaboration with the gallery, the Centre Pompidou in Paris will present a three-day retrospective in early 2022 of Serra’s films and videos, drawn from the museum’s collection as well as from the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. This is the first time that all of the artist’s film and video work will be shown together in Paris. The screenings will be held in Cinéma 2 of the Centre Pompidou.

Conçue en acier résistant à la corrosion atmosphérique, Transmitter (2020) mesure 4 mètres de haut, 17,7 mètres de large et 18,2 mètres de long et sera installée dans l’immense espace d’exposition principal de Gagosian Le Bourget.
En collaboration avec la galerie, le Centre Pompidou à Paris présentera sur trois jours, début 2022, une rétrospective des films et des vidéos de Serra, issues des collections du musée ainsi que des collections du Museum of Modern Art de New York. Pour la première fois à Paris l’ensemble du travail cinématographique de l’artiste sera présenté au public. Les projections auront lieu au Cinéma 2 du Centre Pompidou.

Violinist Alina Ibragimova performs Bach’s Sonata for Solo Violin No. 1 in G Major: Adagio (BWV 1001, c. 1720) from within Richard Serra’s sculpture Transmitter (2020) at Gagosian, Le Bourget. Organized by Bold Tendencies, a nonprofit organization that commissions artists to produce site-specific projects and present performances, in collaboration with Gagosian, this recorded performance took place on May 8, 2022 before a live concert of Olivier Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time, 1941).

Quartet for the End of Time
In Richard Serra’s “Transmitter”

Join Gagosian and Bold Tendencies, a nonprofit organization that commissions artists to produce site-specific projects and present performances, for a live concert of Olivier Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time). Written in 1941 during the French composer’s imprisonment in a German labor camp, the powerful piece comprises eight movements for clarinet, violin, cello and piano. It will be performed by musicians Nicolas Baldeyrou, Mario Brunello, Alina Ibragimova, and Samson Tsoy both within and beside Richard Serra’s sculpture Transmitter (2020), creating a dialogue between sound, material, and space. In conjunction with the installation of Richard Serra’s sculpture Transmitter (2020) at Gagosian, Le Bourget, the gallery and Centre Pompidou, Paris, will present a four-day retrospective of the artist’s films and videos, drawn from the collections of the Centre Pompidou; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and Anthology Film Archives, New York. This is the first time that all of Serra’s film and video work will be shown together in Europe. Each of the six screenings will be introduced by an esteemed curator or scholar, including Eric de Bruyn, Enrico Camporesi, Søren Grammel, Marcella Lista, Philippe-Alain Michaud, and Marie Muracciole. The event is free and open to the public.
