Art Night 2019
Michael Craig-Martin: Sculpture

Michael Craig-Martin’s new exhibition Sculpture at Gagosian, Britannia Street, London, will be open after hours for Art Night 2019, London’s largest free contemporary art festival. The evening will feature music from Spiritland and drinks from the King’s Cross brewery, Two Tribes. Each year the festival focuses on a different area of London to explore the distinctive identity, culture, and architecture of the neighborhood through various forms of art.

Colorful flags by Michael Craig-Martin will be installed among the booths of artgenève. The flags—depicting mass-produced everyday items, such as sunglasses and shoes—probe the relationship between object and image, harnessing the human capacity to imagine absent forms through symbols and pictures. In July 2019, the work was installed in London, as part of Art in Mayfair, organized by the Royal Academy of Arts and Bond Street.

In conjunction with the retrospective display of his drawings at Frieze Masters, Michael Craig-Martin will be in conversation with Dr. Emilie Gordenker, director of the Mauritshuis at the Hague, Netherlands. The pair will discuss Craig-Martin’s work, with particular emphasis on the long-standing centrality of drawing in his practice, as well as the artist’s experience of the changing character of art and the art world over the past fifty years. Giuseppe Penone at Fort Mason

A yearlong outdoor installation by Giuseppe Penone in San Francisco’s historic Fort Mason features two life-size bronze sculptures cast from fallen trees. The project continues the artist’s long investigation of the perpetual give-and-take between humans and nature. In this video, Penone discusses what drew him to this landscape and the concepts behind the installation.
