Incontri: Paolo Roversi and Poliform

Poliform, an Italian furniture brand, has launched a communication project called Incontri that aims to broaden the company’s reach to new forms of expression. In the first chapter of the project, Poliform collaborated with Paolo Roversi, a renowned contemporary photographer, to create a series of photographs showcasing the souls of both design objects and human subjects. Here, Poliform CEO Giovanni Anzani speaks with the Quarterly’s Wyatt Allgeier about the partnership.

Iwa Sake and Kura

As part of the artist’s guest-edited special section for the Spring 2023 issue of the Quarterly, Marc Newson reflects with IWA Sake founder Richard Geoffroy and architect Kengo Kuma on their respective contributions to IWA Sake in Japan: bottle, brewing, and building. The sake brewery, or kura in Japanese, takes its name from its site of Shiraiwa, located in the town of Tateyama.

William Middleton’s forthcoming biography of Karl Lagerfeld, Paradise Now, comes as a major follow-up to his lauded history of Dominique and John de Menil, Double Vision, from 2018. Fashion and Art: Madonna’s Sex and Saint Laurent Rive Droite

This year’s edition of Art Basel Miami Beach brought Saint Laurent to America for a special exhibition curated by creative director Anthony Vaccarello celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of the publication of Madonna’s groundbreaking book, Sex (1992). Staged on the Miami beachfront, the ephemeral exhibition was presented on the occasion of the reissue of Sex by Rive Droite and Callaway, New York, and featured large-format prints of Steven Meisel’s iconic photographs from the book, as well as unpublished images from the original photo shoots. Rennie McDougall reflects on the momentous impact of the publication, tracing Madonna’s ongoing influence on and provocation of popular culture.

Fashion and Art: Pieter Mulier

Pieter Mulier, creative director of Alaïa, presented his second collection for the legendary house in Paris in January 2022. After the presentation, Mulier spoke with Derek Blasberg about the show’s inspirations, including a series of ceramics by Pablo Picasso, and about his profound reverence for the intimacy and artistry of the atelier.

As part of the renovation of the Dior flagship at 30 Montaigne, Paris, the brand has added a permanent space, La Galerie Dior, for the exhibition of archival documentation and clothing from the house’s history. The Quarterly’s Wyatt Allgeier met with Nathalie Crinière, the scenographer behind this presentation, to learn more about the project.

Fashion and Art: Inez & Vinoodh

Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, known better as Inez & Vinoodh, real-life partners and professional photography duo, built their career in the gray space between fashion pictures and fine art photography. This wasn’t by accident. As they tell Derek Blasberg, they used their educational foundation in historical Dutch painting to inform their work with some of the biggest names in contemporary fashion, including Chanel campaigns, Lady Gaga music videos, and editorials in editions of Vogue from around the world.

Peter Lindbergh: Untold Stories

The traveling retrospective gathering the work of legendary photographer Peter Lindbergh will be on view in A Coruña, Spain, from December 4, 2021, through February 28, 2022. Featuring work created over four decades of his expansive career, the exhibition was curated by Lindbergh before his death in 2019. Here, the artist’s son Benjamin Lindbergh speaks with Derek Blasberg about the project.
