Permanent Installation
James Turrell
Leading
James Turrell’s Leading (2023) has been permanently installed at Friends Seminary, a Quaker school in Manhattan, New York. On the school’s sixth floor, the artist created a meeting room whose roof opens to the sky and bathes the space in a spectrum of shifting radiant color, while the sky appears to float inside the installation. Leading is the only one of more than eighty-five Skyspaces by Turrell around the world attached to an active K-12 school. The installation is open to the public on the last Friday of each month that Friends Seminary is in session.

Light, Space and the Art of Perception focuses on James Turrell’s Glass Series (2001–), which melds the latest LED technology with the artist’s long-standing fascination with sensory experiences. The exhibition also features selected two-dimensional works and drawings that underscore Turrell’s multifaceted exploration of light across diverse mediums, as well as documentation of his monumental Roden Crater project, a land artwork in Northern Arizona’s Painted Desert region that epitomizes his lifelong investigation of light, seeing, and psychological perception.
