In SPECTERS TOKYO, Sterling Ruby’s first public installation in Japan, the artist creates a dialogue with Isamu Noguchi’s indoor stone garden Heaven (1977–78), which is permanently installed in the lobby of the Sogetsu Foundation headquarters. Exploring the interactions between the living and the dead, Ruby’s site-specific work draws influence from kaidan, a genre of Japanese ghost stories. The otherworldly scene includes spectral figures made from heavily worn, tattered textiles and found objects that are suspended from the ceiling like puppets.

Forms

Opening reception: Tuesday, December 5, 5–8pm
December 5–10, 2023
Miami Design District, 35 NE 40th Street, Miami

Gagosian is pleased to announce Forms, the eighth annual thematic group exhibition presented jointly by Gagosian and Jeffrey Deitch during Art Basel Miami Beach. The dominant narrative of modern art has focused largely on a swing between the stylistic oppositions of figuration and abstraction. Forms explores alternatives to these paired categories through works that investigate how objects might function as surrogates for human reality, or that refer to objects indirectly through abstracted visual language. Playing on the ambiguities of its title, the art in Forms exists somewhere between a nonrepresentational formalism and a realism of forms, proposing different models for communicating the physical and symbolic complexities of the body.

A selection of paper-based works and furniture by Franz West is on view at the Gagosian Shop in London’s historic Burlington Arcade. Installed throughout both floors of the space, the exhibited works are imbued with the Austrian artist’s riotous fusion of sincerity and absurdity. West’s series of drawings, posters, and collages, conjured from photographs, tawdry advertisements, and soft porn, possess the same raucous aesthetic and wit as his plaster and papier-mâché sculptures and his elegant pieces of functional furniture, which further expand the relationship between art and audience.
