Gagosian is pleased to present recent sculptures and drawings by Richard Serra.

At 980 Madison Avenue, a series of new diptych and triptych drawings will be on view.

Four new works from Serra’s Rounds series will fill the entire West 24th Street gallery. Each forged-steel sculpture is composed of multiple 50-ton elements of differing diameters and heights.

Bisecting the West 21st Street gallery space will be Reverse Curve (2005/19), a sculpture measuring 99 feet long and 13 feet high. Originally conceived in 2005 for a public project in Reggio Emilia, Italy, Reverse Curve is finally being realized for the first time.

Violinist Alina Ibragimova performs Bach’s Sonata for Solo Violin No. 1 in G Major: Adagio (BWV 1001, c. 1720) from within Richard Serra’s sculpture Transmitter (2020) at Gagosian, Le Bourget. Organized by Bold Tendencies, a nonprofit organization that commissions artists to produce site-specific projects and present performances, in collaboration with Gagosian, this recorded performance took place on May 8, 2022 before a live concert of Olivier Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time, 1941).

Richard Serra: Triptychs and Diptychs, Forged Rounds, Reverse Curve is available for online reading from June 14 through July 13 as part of the From the Library series. Housed in a slipcase, this two-volume set documents Serra’s three concurrent 2019 New York exhibitions, which presented five new sculptures and more than twenty drawings by the artist. An essay by Julian Rose provides an in-depth examination of the monolithic nature of Serra’s work, and its engagement with architecture on its own terms.

Sounding Serra
Music in Conversation with Reverse Curve

Saturday, December 14, 2019, 8pm
Gagosian, West 21st Street, New York

Join Gagosian for a concert featuring new music inspired by Richard Serra’s Reverse Curve (2005/19) and other works that engage with questions of weight, timbre, volume, and form. Some of the compositions will test the acoustical properties of the sculpture within the room, while others will produce sound masses in the shadow of the sculpture, creating dialogues between sound and space. The range of musical strategies will illustrate a historical path from the 1970s through the present day. Musicians Lea Bertucci, Miguel Frasconi, Joan La Barbara, Chris McIntyre, Chris Nappi, and Danny Tunick are all major players in the world of experimental music and collaborate in addition to their solo projects. As well as their own compositions they will perform a 1973 piece by Michael Byron. The event has reached capacity.

The Complete Films and Videos

In conjunction with a trio of Gagosian exhibitions of Richard Serra’s work in New York, the gallery and Anthology Film Archives will present a three-day retrospective of the artist’s films and videos from October 17 through 19, drawn from the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Anthology Film Archives; Joan Jonas; and Stiftung Situation Kunst, Bochum, Germany. This is the first time that all of the artist’s film and video work will be shown together. The screening on October 19 will be followed by a panel discussion between curators Søren Grammel, Chrissie Iles, and Jeffrey Weiss, moderated by art historian Benjamin Buchloh.
