About

Gagosian is pleased to present a selection of photographs by Francesca Woodman from circa 1977–80 at its gallery in London’s Burlington Arcade. Staging the figure in relation to interiors and furniture, gloves and panes of glass, the images move beyond the recording of appearance to evoke transformation and allegory. Picturing herself and other models, Woodman’s compositions represent the body as fragmented and liminal within these spaces, drawing on her fascination with Surrealism. She used prints and transparencies of these images to create artist’s books, transforming the pages of antique journals and notebooks that she collected in the flea markets and bookstores of Rome.

The presentation coincides with Francesca Woodman and Julia Margaret Cameron: Portraits to Dream In at the National Portrait Gallery, London (March 21–June 16, 2024), and Francesca Woodman at Gagosian, New York (March 13–April 27, 2024).

The Gagosian Shop on the gallery’s ground floor will feature a selection of publications on the artist, including Francesca Woodman: The Artist’s Books, published by MACK in association with the Woodman Family Foundation.
