Inside the issue, we celebrate the centenary of Avedon’s birth with reflections from a range of cultural figures and a personal essay by author and poet Jake Skeets.
The issue also includes Salomé Gómez-Upegui on American artists and reproductive justice; a conversation about themes of identity and liminality in Gagosian’s Rites of Passage exhibition; and features on painters Harold Ancart and Katharina Grosse.

The Spring 2026 issue of Gagosian Quarterly is now available, featuring Marcel Duchamp’s L.H.O.O.Q. (1964) on the cover.

Don Quaintance’s new book Duchamp in California: Walter Hopps Curates a Retrospective (Menil Collection/König, 2025) details the rich history of the Pasadena Art Museum and the consequential Marcel Duchamp retrospective that Walter Hopps curated there in 1963. Here Quaintance gives the backstory to the monograph and shares an excerpt from the book’s fourth chapter.

For Art Basel 2025, the fair has commissioned Katharina Grosse to create CHOIR, a large-scale, site-responsive painting for the Messeplatz Project. The curator for the project, Natalia Grabowska, met with Grosse in her studio in Berlin ahead of the work’s creation to talk through the process; Grosse’s approach to the specifics of the Messeplatz’s architecture; and the importance of unscripted encounters.

Last fall, Taryn Simon debuted an interactive sculpture entitled Kleroterion (2024). Based on a device from the beginnings of democracy in Athens, the work was installed at Storm King Art Center, New Windsor, New York. As part of that presentation, Simon participated in a panel discussion with Nora Lawrence, Tomás González Olavarría, and Philip Lindsay about democracy, sortition, and art’s place in politics.

Fondation Louis Vuitton is staging Pop Forever, Tom Wesselmann &…, which explores the artist’s legacy through a comprehensive survey of his artworks presented alongside those by thirty-five artists of different generations and nationalities, from the 1920s to the present day. Also, the Estate of Tom Wesselmann, Gagosian, and Almine Rech are releasing a forthcoming monograph dedicated to the artist’s formative series, The Great American Nude. Here, the book’s editor and lead author Susan Davidson meets with Jeffrey Sturges, director of exhibitions for the Estate of Tom Wesselmann, and Gagosian director Jason Ysenburg to discuss the importance of this series.

Novelist Francine Prose visited Harold Ancart’s Brooklyn studio this past spring. Here, she reports on the paintings she encountered there and ponders the medium’s power to take us outside of ourselves.

Jake Skeets reflects on Richard Avedon’s series In the American West, focusing on the portrait of his uncle, Benson James.

The exhibition Katharina Grosse Studio Paintings, 1988–2022: Returns, Revisions, Inventions premiered at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, Saint Louis, in September 2022. It continues its tour with presentations at the Kunstmuseum Bern, through June 2023, and the Kunstmuseum Bonn, opening in April 2024. To mark this momentous survey, the show’s curator, Sabine Eckmann, met with Grosse to discuss the evolution of her practice.

In celebration of the centenary of Richard Avedon’s birth, more than 150 artists, designers, musicians, writers, curators, and representatives of the fashion world were asked to select a photograph by Avedon for an exhibition at Gagosian, New York, and to elaborate on the ways in which image and artist have affected them. We present a sampling of these images and writings.

Susan Davidson, editor of the forthcoming monograph on the Great American Nudes, a series of works by Tom Wesselmann, explores the artist’s early experiments with collage, tracing their development from humble beginnings to the iconic series of paintings.
