About

Reception for the artist: Saturday, February 8, 2003, 6 – 8pm

Gagosian Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Cecily Brown. This will be the artist's first large-scale solo show in Los Angeles.

In recent years, Brown has become one of the leading artists of her generation, known for her highly charged paintings, both in content and in style. With this exhibition, Brown continues to explore several themes and clearly defines her roots in art history – the figure in landscape, the ravished nude, the bacchanal (or is it a battle?). This breadth, seen in the subject matter, is also illustrated in the artist's formal approach: some images are rendered abstractly and others with a clarity not before seen in Brown's paintings.

Currently her work can also be seen in "Directions – Cecily Brown" at the Hirshhorn Museum until March 2, 2003. Cecily Brown's work is also included in many museum collections such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Broad Family Art Foundation, Los Angeles; Museo di Sintra, Portugal and the Tate Gallery, London.

This exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, with an essay by Jan Tumlir.
