I was always a colorist. I’ve always had a phenomenal love of color. . . . I mean, I just move color around on its own. So that’s where the Spot paintings came from—to create that structure to do those colors, and do nothing. I suddenly got what I wanted. It was just a way of pinning down the joy of color.

Gagosian is pleased to present The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 by Damien Hirst.
The exhibition will take place at once across all of Gagosian’s eleven locations in New York, London, Paris, Los Angeles, Rome, Athens, Geneva, and Hong Kong, opening worldwide on January 12, 2012. Most of the paintings are being lent by private individuals and public institutions, with more than 150 different lenders from twenty countries. Conceived as a single exhibition in multiple locations, The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 makes use of this demographic fact to determine the content of each exhibition according to locality.
Included in the exhibition are more than three hundred paintings, including the first spot on board that Hirst created in 1986; the smallest Spot painting comprising half a spot and measuring less than a square inch (1996); a monumental work comprising only four spots, each sixty inches in diameter; and the most recent Spot painting (completed in 2011), containing 25,781 spots that are each one millimeter in diameter, with no single color ever repeated.

Η γκαλερί Gagosian παρουσιάζει την Îκθεση The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 με ζωγραφικά Îργα του Damien Hirst. Η επιμÎλεια της Îκθεσης Îχει ως κεντρικÏŒ άξονα την παράλληλη παρουσίαση Îργων του Damien Hirst στις Îντεκα γκαλερί Gagosian ανά τον κÏŒσμο (ΝÎα ΥÏŒρκη, Λονδίνο, Παρίσι, Λος Άντζελες, ΡÏŽμη, Αθήνα, ΓενεÏη και Χονγκ Κονγκ) με ταυτÏŒχρονα εγκαίνια στις 12 Ιανουαρίου. ΠρÏŒκειται για μία ενιαία Îκθεση που θα διεξάγεται σε πολλά διαφορετικά μÎρη και τα Îργα που θα εκτίθενται σε κάθε γκαλερί θα επιλεγοÏν ανάλογα με τον τÏŒπο ÏŒπου πραγματοποιείται η κάθε επιμÎρους Îκθεση. Τα πιο πολλά απÏŒ τα Îργα προÎρχονται απÏŒ περισσÏŒτερες απÏŒ 150 δημÏŒσιες και ιδιωτικÎς συλλογÎς, απÏŒ 20 διαφορετικÎς χÏŽρες.
Στην Îκθεση συμπεριλαμβάνονται πάνω απÏŒ 300 πίνακες, απÏŒ το πρÏŽτο Spot (κουκίδα) που ζωγράφισε ο Hirst πάνω σε σανίδα το 1986, μÎχρι το μικρÏŒτερο Spot painting (1996) που περιÎχει μισή κουκίδα και οι διαστάσεις του είναι 2,4 × 1,2 εκ., ÏŒπως επίσης το Îργο μνημειακÏŽν διαστάσεων με τις τÎσσερις κουκίδες που η κάθε μία Îχει διάμετρο 152,4 εκ., καθÏŽς και Îνα απÏŒ τα πιο πρÏŒσφατα Îργα το οποίο ολοκληρÏŽθηκε το 2011 και περιÎχει 25.781κουκίδες που η κάθε μία Îχει διάμετρο 1 χιλιοστÏŒ και κανÎνα χρÏŽμα δεν επαναλαμβάνεται.
Παράλληλα με την Îκθεση θα κυκλοφορήσει η Îκδοση The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011, μια εικονογραφημÎνη και πλήρης αναφορά σε ÏŒλα τα Îργα με κουκίδες που φιλοτεχνήθηκαν απÏŒ τον Hirst στο αντίστοιχο διάστημα. Η Îκδοση αυτή, που είναι μια συνεργασία της γκαλερί Gagosian και της εταιρείας Other Criteria, θα περιλαμβάνει κείμενα της επιμελήτριας του MoMA Ann Temkin, του τεχνοκριτικοÏ Michael Bracewell και του ιστορικοÏ τÎχνης Robert Pincus-Witten. Παράλληλα θα περιλαμβάνει μια συζήτηση ανάμεσα στον Damien Hirst, τον Ed Ruscha και τον John Baldessari.
