Gagosian is pleased to present The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 by Damien Hirst.
The exhibition will take place at once across all of Gagosian’s eleven locations in New York, London, Paris, Los Angeles, Rome, Athens, Geneva, and Hong Kong, opening worldwide on January 12, 2012. Most of the paintings are being lent by private individuals and public institutions, with more than 150 different lenders from twenty countries. Conceived as a single exhibition in multiple locations, The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 makes use of this demographic fact to determine the content of each exhibition according to locality.
Included in the exhibition are more than three hundred paintings, including the first spot on board that Hirst created in 1986; the smallest Spot painting comprising half a spot and measuring less than a square inch (1996); a monumental work comprising only four spots, each sixty inches in diameter; and the most recent Spot painting (completed in 2011), containing 25,781 spots that are each one millimeter in diameter, with no single color ever repeated.

Cette exposition aura lieu au même moment dans les onze espaces de Gagosian à New York, Londres, Paris, Los Angeles, Rome, Athènes, Genève et Hong-Kong. La plupart des peintures ont été prêtées par des collectionneurs privés ou des institutions publiques, plus de 150 prêteurs de 20 pays différents au total. Conçue comme une seule et unique exposition ayant lieu à différents endroits du globe, The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 se sert de cette donnée démographique pour déterminer le contenu de chaque exposition en fonction de sa localité.
Plus de trois cents peintures sont incluses dans l’exposition, du premier pois sur carton créé par Hirst en 1986, en passant par la plus petite spot painting représentant un demi-pois et mesurant moins d’un pouce carré (1996), ou une œuvre monumentale constituée de quatre pois seulement, chaque pois ayant un diamètre de cent cinquante centimètres ; jusqu’à la peinture la plus récente réalisée en 2011 comprenant 25,781 pois ayant chacun un diamètre de 1 millimètre, et dans laquelle aucune couleur n’est jamais répétée.
En parallèle de l’exposition, sera publié un catalogue illustré The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 complet et définitif retraçant chacune des Spot paintings réalisées par Hirst de 1986 à aujourd’hui. Le catalogue The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 publié par Gagosian et Other Criteria contiendra des essais rédigés par la commissaire d’exposition du Museum of Modern Art Ann Temkin, le critique d’art Michael Bracewell et l’historien d’art Robert Pincus-Witten mais aussi une conversation entre Damien Hirst, Ed Ruscha et John Baldessari.
La troisième édition de l’application iPad de Gagosian qui sera aussi lancée en janvier permettra, en parcourant plus de quatre-vingt-dix spot paintings, un regard interactif et en profondeur sur la série.
Damien Hirst: The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 précède la première rétrospective majeure consacrée à Damien Hirst qui débutera à la Tate Modern à Londres en Avril 2012.
