Gagosian will present Remembering Bilderstreit: Georg Baselitz and Roy Lichtenstein, bringing together works by these two great iconoclastic artists. With one exception, all the works date from the 1980s, a period of great productivity and radical experimentation for both Baselitz and Lichtenstein. In 1989 both artists took part in Bilderstreit (“Picture Fight” or “Conflict of Images”), a huge exhibition of postwar Western art held in Cologne. One of its guiding principles was the idea of a “coincidence of opposites”: the confrontation of works of art of contrasting appearance but with similar aims. At one point in the exhibition paintings by Baselitz and Lichtenstein were shown opposite each other in the same space. Among these was Lichtenstein’s Paintings: Oriental Still Life (1984), which will be on display in the booth. Tickets available at www.frieze.com.
