The Terry and Jo Harvey Allen Collection at Texas Tech University

As part of Gagosian’s Building a Legacy program, singer-songwriter and multimedia artist Terry Allen and actress, playwright, and poet Jo Harvey Allen will speak with Gagosian director Rani Singh about their unconventional approach to creating a lasting legacy. In 2019, the Lubbock natives placed their archives—containing over fifty years worth of personal journals, sketchbooks, correspondence, scripts, and audiovisual recordings—with Texas Tech University. Since the pair are still actively working, the Terry and Jo Harvey Allen Collection is a “living archive,” which will grow as the Allens continue to create. To encourage the use of the collection for scholarly study, a creative studies center has also been established in collaboration with the Allens to host classes, fellowships, residencies, and research devoted to the artistic process. Launched in 2018, Gagosian’s Building a Legacy program aims to provide a unique platform of thoughtful discourse and education for artists, estates, and foundations to create a lasting and impactful legacy during an artist’s lifetime and beyond.

Join Gagosian for a walkthrough of the exhibition Adriana Varejão: Talavera at Gagosian, New York, led by the artist together with Mexican curator Pedro Alonzo. In 2017, Varejão and Alonzo made a research trip to Mexico to study Talavera poblana, the richly diverse ceramic tradition that inspired the current exhibition. While guiding viewers through the exhibition, the pair will recount their experiences and the many references—from Indigenous and pre-Hispanic to colonial and modernist—for this body of work, revealing some of the potent narratives inherent in material culture, global trade, art history, and the corresponding power dynamics in Mexico and Brazil. Sculpture Milwaukee 2021

Theaster Gates has been invited to serve as a guest curator for Sculpture Milwaukee, a nonprofit organization transforming downtown Milwaukee’s cultural landscape every year with an outdoor exhibition of sculpture that acts as a catalyst for community engagement, economic development, and creative placemaking. Gates worked closely with cocurator Michelle Grabner to select artists for the 2021 exhibition, entitled there is this We, with further programming to be announced.

Join Gagosian for a conversation between Sir David Adjaye and Rick Lowe, moderated by Thelma Golden, director and chief curator of the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, on the occasion of Social Works at Gagosian, New York. Livestreaming from the exhibition in Chelsea in advance of the opening on June 24, the trio will explore Adjaye and Lowe’s shared interests in architecture, community building, and the relationship between space and the Black body. Featuring work by twelve artists, the exhibition includes Asaase (2021), Adjaye’s first large-scale autonomous sculpture, and Black Wall Street Journey (2020–), a new series of paintings by Lowe memorializing the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre in Oklahoma.
