Still Life Stilled is a catalytic presentation, organized by Joshua Chuang, of historical and contemporary works that explore photography’s unique capacity to both invest inanimate tableaux with substance and find meaning in suspending the theater of life. Featured artists include Richard Avedon, Kwame Brathwaite, William Eggleston, Roe Ethridge, Robert Frank, Nan Goldin, Jan Groover, Andreas Gursky, Deana Lawson, Sally Mann, Tyler Mitchell, Irving Penn, Taryn Simon, Frederick Sommer, and Jeff Wall, among others.

Art Work: Sally Mann and Amor Towles

Sally Mann joined novelist Amor Towles in a conversation about her widely celebrated new book, Art Work: On the Creative Life (2025), at an event hosted by the New School and the Strand in New York. Published by Abrams, Art Work is about the challenges and pleasures of the creative process. Its mix of illuminating stories, practical advice, and life lessons, illustrated throughout with photographs, letters, and journal entries, offers insights into Mann’s own experience of making art. Here, Mann and Towles speak about the writing process, historical ghosts, and fortunate mistakes.

Nan Goldin: Another Word for Love

For the fortieth anniversary of Nan Goldin’s genre-defining photobook The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (Aperture, 1986), Gagosian, London, will be exhibiting all of its 126 photographs, the first time the entire body of work will be shown in the United Kingdom. To celebrate the occasion, David Velasco looks back to the series’ creation and evolution, considering the radical exploration of seeing and love at the core of The Ballad.

Irving Penn: A Print-Making Obsession

Joshua Chuang tracks the midlife genesis of the celebrated photographer’s devotion to the art of making prints, focusing on the many versions of Seine Rowboat.

Andreas Gursky: Paris, Montparnasse II

At the center of Andreas Gursky’s new exhibition in Paris at Gagosian’s rue de Castiglione gallery is Paris, Montparnasse II (2025), a reengagement with his celebrated photograph from 1993 of the architect Jean Dubuisson’s iconic building in the capital city. In the new work, Gursky reexamines the subject, tracing the changes time has inscribed on the architecture and its occupants. Here, in conversation with the Quarterly’s Wyatt Allgeier and shown alongside behind-the-scenes images from the artwork’s making, the artist addresses his motivations and interests in this long-term project.

A Sense of Abundance

Péjú Oshin visits Christine Checinska, senior curator of African and diaspora textiles and fashion at the Victoria & Albert Museum. From her London office, Checinska shares her curatorial insights into the international traveling exhibition Africa Fashion, which originated at the V&A, and the Costume Institute’s current show Superfine: Tailoring Black Style at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The conversation delves into notions of diaspora, memory, homecoming, and the freedoms of being “anti-disciplinary.”

Taryn Simon: Kleroterion

Last fall, Taryn Simon debuted an interactive sculpture entitled Kleroterion (2024). Based on a device from the beginnings of democracy in Athens, the work was installed at Storm King Art Center, New Windsor, New York. As part of that presentation, Simon participated in a panel discussion with Nora Lawrence, Tomás González Olavarría, and Philip Lindsay about democracy, sortition, and art’s place in politics.

Jeff Wall: Before the Image

Jeff Wall explains the stories and literary allusions behind two of his photographs that will appear in an exhibition at Gagosian, New York, in November.

Nan Goldin: Sisters, Saints, Sibyls

Michael Cary explores the history behind, and power within, Nan Goldin’s video triptych Sisters, Saints, Sibyls. The work will be on view at the former Welsh chapel at 83 Charing Cross Road, London, as part of Gagosian Open, from May 30 to June 23, 2024.

Gagosian presented an evening of poetry inside to light, and then return—, an exhibition of new works by Edmund de Waal and Sally Mann, inspired by each other’s practices, at Gagosian, New York. In this video—taking the artists’ shared love of poetry, fragments, and metamorphosis as a point of departure—poets Elisa Gonzalez and Terrance Hayes read a selection of their recent works that resonate with the themes of elegy and historical reckoning in the show. The evening was moderated by Jonathan Galassi, chairman and executive editor at Farrar, Straus & Giroux.
