Gagosian is pleased to participate in TEFAF New York Spring with a special presentation of works by Roy Lichtenstein. On view are paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from 1962 to 1980 that borrow from mass media and later reinterpret art historical movements such as Impressionism, Futurism, and Abstract Expressionism, epitomizing Lichtenstein’s ability to combine the illusionistic techniques of painting, sculpture, and design.

Avis Berman, author of Roy Lichtenstein: The Impossible Collection, will be in conversation with Dorothy Lichtenstein to celebrate the release of the book. In this new Assouline Ultimate Collection volume, one hundred of Roy Lichtenstein’s most memorable works are lavishly reproduced, from the iconic Whaam! (1963) and Drowning Girl (1963) to later reinterpretations of paintings by Picasso, Matisse, and van Gogh and public commissions such as his 1994 mural for the Times Square – 42nd Street New York City subway station. Lise Motherwell, a stepdaughter of Helen Frankenthaler and vice president of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, and Elizabeth Smith, executive director of the Foundation, recently cocurated an exhibition of the artist’s work entitled Abstract Climates: Helen Frankenthaler in Provincetown. Pittura/Panorama: Paintings by Helen Frankenthaler, 1952–1992 marks the first time that Frankenthaler’s paintings have been exhibited in Venice since her inclusion in the 1966 Biennale as part of the US Pavilion. This video, including interviews with the show’s curator, John Elderfield; the chairman of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, Clifford Ross; and the Foundation’s executive director, Elizabeth Smith, provides viewers with an in-depth look at the fourteen paintings included in the exhibition.
