A wall sculpture in polychromed wood, Cherubs forms a key part of Koons’s renowned Made in Heaven series (1989–91) and merges his investigation of kitsch aesthetics and commodity culture with a veneration of Baroque craftsmanship—it was carved by artisans from the Bavarian village of Oberammergau. In the work, the pastel-tinted, flower-decked busts of two angelic putti echo the rich gilding and ornamentation associated with ecclesiastical interiors of the Counter-Reformation. In an update for the modern era that also alludes to other works by Koons, a teddy bear is nestled within the upper figure’s fluttering wings. Making reference to the Rococo visions of Jean-Honoré Fragonard and François Boucher, and evoking the cavorting figures of Cupid or Eros, Cherubs combines the religious and the sensual, bringing divergent conceptions of taste and value into confrontation with one another.
A new essay on Cherubs by art historian Sydney Stutterheim and an associated video will be published on the Gagosian and TEFAF websites to accompany the presentation.

FIAC Online 2021

Artists for Biden

Artists for Biden is an online-only sale of works by leading contemporary artists to support the Biden Victory Fund—a joint fundraising committee authorized by Biden for President, the Democratic National Committee, and forty-seven state Democratic parties. Christopher Rudd’s Touché
In celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride Month, we share Christopher Rudd’s acclaimed pas de deux, for a limited engagement from June 24 to June 30. American Ballet Theatre dancers João Menegussi and Calvin Royal III perform this charged and ultimately tender love story. The work is unique for its challenge of ballet’s traditional gender roles and its use of an intimacy director to navigate choreographic consent.

Taryn Simon: An Occupation of Loss
In Taryn Simon’s performance work An Occupation of Loss (2016), professional mourners enact rituals of grief, simultaneously broadcasting their lamentations from within a sculptural installation.
