Gagosian is pleased to participate in Frieze Seoul 2023 with a presentation of contemporary works by gallery artists, including Derrick Adams, Georg Baselitz, Dan Colen, Edmund de Waal, Jadé Fadojutimi, Urs Fischer, Cy Gavin, Mehdi Ghadyanloo, Nan Goldin, Katharina Grosse, Jennifer Guidi, Thomas Houseago, Alex Israel, Rick Lowe, Takashi Murakami, Nam June Paik, Giuseppe Penone, Ed Ruscha, Alexandria Smith, Anna Weyant, Stanley Whitney, Jonas Wood, and Richard Wright, among others.

Coinciding with the fair is the arrival of Jiyoung Lee, who was recently appointed to lead the gallery’s operations in Korea. Lee joins Gagosian following nearly fifteen years based in Seoul working on behalf of both Korean and Western galleries. Her appointment builds on the gallery’s establishment of a business entity in Korea last year, and provides for expanded activities in the region.

Derrick Adams: View Master

On April 16, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, opened the first midcareer survey of Derrick Adams’s multidisciplinary practice. Covering over twenty years of work, the exhibition, titled View Master, brings together the artist’s painting, sculpture, collage, performance, and video, as well as a vibrant new commission created for the museum’s façade. Ahead of the opening, Adams met with Tessa Bachi Haas, cocurator of the survey, to discuss his formative experiences with television, the impact of his work in arts education on his practice, and the importance of taking a more complex, more joyful, and more expansive approach to Black American life and culture.

Giuseppe Penone: The Reflection of Bronze

Adam D. Weinberg has been working with Giuseppe Penone on an exhibition of the artist’s new sculptures, The Reflection of Bronze, that opens at Gagosian, New York, on April 22. The works explore the character and possibilities of bronze. Here, Weinberg considers Penone’s enduring engagement with the alloy and addresses the conceptual underpinnings of the exhibition’s three-room structure.

Georg Baselitz and the Possibilities of Print

On the occasion of Baselitz: AVANTI! at the Museo Novecento in Florence, Italy, Holly EJ Black considers the roots and reverberations of Georg Baselitz’s printmaking.

Jonas Wood: The Rules of the Game

Following a recent visit to Jonas Wood’s Los Angeles studio, Justin Beal thinks through the artist’s paintings of tennis courts—the subject of an exhibition at Gagosian, Beverly Hills—examining their relation to the game, color theory, and the rewards of practice.

Nan Goldin: Another Word for Love

For the fortieth anniversary of Nan Goldin’s genre-defining photobook The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (Aperture, 1986), Gagosian, London, will be exhibiting all of its 126 photographs, the first time the entire body of work will be shown in the United Kingdom. To celebrate the occasion, David Velasco looks back to the series’ creation and evolution, considering the radical exploration of seeing and love at the core of The Ballad.

Anna Weyant: Wait for It

Anna Weyant’s first solo institutional exhibition, at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, was curated by Guillermo Solana in close collaboration with the artist, and places more than twenty paintings by Weyant in dialogue with a selection of works from the museum’s permanent collection. Sydney Stutterheim considers the artist’s contemporary exploration of suspense, identity, concealment, and temporality.

Katharina Grosse: Messeplatz Project 2025

For Art Basel 2025, the fair has commissioned Katharina Grosse to create CHOIR, a large-scale, site-responsive painting for the Messeplatz Project. The curator for the project, Natalia Grabowska, met with Grosse in her studio in Berlin ahead of the work’s creation to talk through the process; Grosse’s approach to the specifics of the Messeplatz’s architecture; and the importance of unscripted encounters.

Derrick Adams and Ekow Eshun

Join Gagosian for a conversation between Derrick Adams and Ekow Eshun, author, curator, and chair of the commissioning group for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London. The pair discuss Adams’s latest paintings depicting visions of Black Americana—featured in the exhibition Situation Comedy at Gagosian, Davies Street, London—within the context of British contemporary culture.

The World as Playground

Bartolomeo Sala considers the brief yet revolutionary dreams of Arte Povera. On the occasion of a retrospective at the Bourse de Commerce, Paris, he explores the historical conditions that gave rise to the radical midcentury movement and the warnings we might glean today from its legacy.

Alex Israel: Noir

Sam Wasson brings his deep knowledge of cinema, Hollywood, and film noir to Alex Israel’s new paintings of Los Angeles.

Takashi Murakami and Hans Ulrich Obrist

In conjunction with the exhibition Japanese Art History à la Takashi Murakami at Gagosian, London, Takashi Murakami and Hans Ulrich Obrist, curator and artistic director of Serpentine, London, sit down to discuss the artist’s exploration and contemporizing of ancient Japanese artworks and movements. The two delve into Murakami’s investigation of Iwasa Matabei’s seventeenth-century masterwork Rakuchū-Rakugai-zu (Scenes in and around Kyoto) and the Kyoto-based style of Rinpa painting, among other examples.

Back to the Future: Takashi Murakami’s Kyoto Paintings

Ed Schad, curator and publications manager at the Broad, Los Angeles, examines Takashi Murakami’s prolonged engagement with the practice and concept of the copy. An exhibition of new paintings by the artist, Japanese Art History à la Takashi Murakami, opened at Gagosian, London, on December 10, 2024; Schad reflects on Murakami’s recent works in the wake of his visit to the artist’s 2024 exhibition at Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art.
