Theaster Gates’s exhibition Amalgam at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, features some of the artist’s slate wall drawings. Watch as Gates creates one of these works in this time-lapse video, featuring music by Theaster Gates and the Black Monks. The drawing forms an improvised timeline that brings together divergent colonial histories, juxtaposing the local history of Malaga Island in Maine with broader networks across Europe, Africa, and the United States. Punctuated by key moments from the history of anti-miscegenation laws in the US, Gates’s diagrams allow multiple narratives to resonate across time and space.
