Craft in Art, 1950–2019
November 22, 2019–January 2021
Whitney Museum of American Art, New York
Making Knowing: Craft in Art, 1950–2019 foregrounds how visual artists have explored the materials, methods, and strategies of craft over the past seven decades. Some expand techniques with long histories, such as weaving, sewing, or pottery, while others experiment with clay, beads, and glass, among other mediums. Work by Richard Artschwager, Mike Kelley, Shio Kusaka, and Sterling Ruby is included.

Work by Shio Kusaka is on display at the historic Neutra VDL Studio and Residences in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. The special project, curated by Douglas Fogle and Hanneke Skerath, presents ceramic vessels, sculptures, and crafted textile designs by Kusaka. Responding to the unique architectural environment of Richard Neutra’s former home and workspace, the artist has installed these works throughout the interior of the VDL.
